It’s hard to find two other activities that create the same sense of peace, serenity, and enjoyment of the outdoors as golf and fly fishing in Southern Oregon, home to many rivers ideal for fly fishing. Several locations are within an hour of The Resort at Eagle Point, including the Applegate River, Chetco River, Elk River, and Rogue River.
The Rogue River is perhaps the most well-known river in Southern Oregon and is home to steelhead, salmon, and trout. Fly fishing enthusiasts have good luck with dark intruder patterns such as black and red flies or nymphing with large stonefly attractor patterns. For those who prefer casting with large, dry flies to attract trout to the surface, the upper stretches of the Rogue River in May or June provide the most bountiful fishing opportunities. Spring Chinook, Fall Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead all have different peaks to their seasons, so there’s almost always a plentiful supply of fish in a segment of the river or at the bay in Gold Beach.
Avid fly fishers also enjoy a day on the Applegate River, a 51-mile tributary of the Rogue River near Grants Pass and Jacksonville. If you’re lucky enough to visit during March, the Applegate River provides an exceptional experience for catching Winter Steelhead using a fly rod. Plus, the river is a little smaller and features many gravel banks, which makes it a good place for beginners to build their fly fishing skills.
