For the avid golfer, their clubs become an extension of their body as they strive to achieve their personal best on the golf course. Most golfers spend years building their ultimate bag of clubs, so it can be daunting for beginners to figure out where to start. If you’re new to the game or just ready to level up your game, here are a few tips for selecting the perfect set of golf clubs.
- Don’t rely on the name. You’re likely to hear other dedicated golfers vow that their chosen brand of golf clubs is the best thing since sliced bread. Or, you may be taking note of the types of clubs your favorite professionals use while watching tournaments. Getting recommendations and developing ideas about the kind of clubs you’re interested in is helpful, but don’t get too tied to them. What works well for other players might not be best for you. Be prepared to try several different brands of equipment before investing.
- Check the grip. Not everyone’s hands are the same size which makes the size of the grip a significant factor in choosing the right club. The grip is the ability to wrap your fingers correctly around the club. A too small or too big club will hinder your ability to swing the club correctly. Ideally, you should be able to hold the club using the middle and ring fingers of your left hand with very little touching the pad with your thumb. Your pro golf shop will be able to work with you to evaluate your grip and then re-configure the club as necessary for a perfect fit.
- Examine the shaft’s length. Having the right length of the club is crucial so that you can use the proper body posture throughout your swing. Taller players will need a longer shaft to connect with the ball correctly. At the same time, different clubs provide various levels of flexibility. Your pro shop will be able to assess your needs and help you sort through the options to see what is most comfortable for you.
- Review the loft. The loft is the angle between a line running down the center of the shaft and one running along the face of the club. Clubs with a lower loft (i.e., a 3 iron with a loft of 21-23 degrees) will make the ball travel farther than one with a higher loft. On the other hand, a higher loft results in the ball rising and descending on a steeper angle. It’s a good idea to have someone from the pro shop evaluate your game to help you determine which clubs are best suited for you.
- Consider clubhead size. A larger clubhead size will make it easier for beginners to connect with the ball. On the other hand, a more oversized clubhead comes with additional weight and bulk, making it more challenging to achieve the perfect swing. Most brands provide options for standard, midsize, and oversized heads to accommodate every golfer’s needs. Trying out different sizes is an excellent way to determine which clubs to purchase.
- Take your time and ask for help. Newcomers who first experience the thrill of the game often feel excited to rush out and purchase their own set of clubs and a snazzy new bag. Keep in mind that avid golfers spend years building their collections, often trading out a club here or there as their skills develop or they discover a new type of club that works better for them. Working with the staff at the pro shop to evaluate your specific needs and borrowing various brands and styles of clubs is a smart way to ensure you’re investing in the best tools for your game.
