Southern Oregon enjoys an average of 195 days of sunshine annually, making our area a prime location for outdoor activities. Summer temperatures can range from pleasant to hot, though. The warmest time of the year in Eagle Point runs from June 22 through September 19, when we expect to experience average high temperatures between 88°F and 92°F. Fortunately, golfers can still enjoy the greens with a few good strategies to stay cool on the golf course.
Ways to beat the heat while golfing:
- Drink water. Heat and sun will pull fluids out of your body. Dehydration is one of the most severe health problems related to heat exposure. Drinking water throughout the game is an easy way to keep your body and mind healthy in hot temperatures. Remember that coffee and alcohol will dehydrate you, so if you drink these before you start or during a break, you’ll make it harder to stay hydrated while playing.
- Take an umbrella. Umbrellas provide valuable respite against the harsh rays of the sun. Use one while walking from one hole to the next, or take a few minutes in the shade if you feel too warm.
- Bring a cold towel or neck cooling wrap. Many products are available to keep you cool in the heat. You can either stash a frozen, wet towel in your cooler or, better yet, invest a few bucks in a cooling neck wrap. Applying a cool compress to the back of your neck will often keep your body from overheating.
- Choose the proper clothing. Dry-fit fabrics use a high-performance microfiber construction to help keep your body cool by wicking away sweat. This material will help you stay dry and comfortable while golfing.
- Rent a cart. Even if you usually walk the course, you may want to rent a golf cart on hot days. A cart provides you with a shaded place to take a breather, and it will be easier to get off the course if you do begin to overheat.
- Wear sunscreen and sunglasses. Protecting your skin and your eyes from the sun is extremely important. Keeping your body shielded from the sun today will give you more days to golf later on.
- Know your limits. Regardless of all the strategies you use to stay cool, stop your game if your body begins to feel overheated. It’s better to end a game early than to deal with the effects of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
