One popular activity many families enjoy is a visit to Historic Jacksonville, Oregon, where you will feel like you’ve traveled back in time to the early days of the State.
Visit the Beekmans in their 1932 home.
The Beekmans were a prominent family in Jacksonville at the turn of the century. They had lived in their home as one of the wealthiest families in the community since the 1870s. However, the depression hit them hard just as it did throughout most of America’s communities. Be a part of living history in their hosted one-hour presentations to hear what it was like to grow up in Jacksonville and how they are preparing for the next stage of their lives.
Stroll through a pioneer cemetery.
Many of the earliest pioneers who came to Jacksonville were on the hunt for gold or acres of land. Both were abundant, yet the conditions were rough, and only the toughest survived. In Jacksonville’s Historic Cemetery, you’ll learn about many of the early families who developed the area and their trials and tribulations as early pioneers. The cemetery is the oldest within the Pacific Northwest and one of the few historic cemeteries still in use today.
Go ghost hunting.
During the warmer months of the year, you can reserve a spot on one of the city’s haunted history tours. Learn about some of the darker side of pioneer life, including brothels, hangings, murders, arsons, saloons, and epidemics. Some aspects might be a little spooky, but none of it is cheezy since these haunted history tours are educational and based on actual facts about the town’s history. You can also schedule private group tours to create a shared activity for a larger number of people.
Stop by the Beekman Bank.
Nearly 4,000 visitors come to the Beekman Bank every year, and there’s a good reason. The bank was one of the town’s most important businesses as the city began to take shape. Beekman Bank was the first financial business to open its doors between San Francisco and Portland during the 1800s. On the weekends, you can learn what it was like to keep your money at the bank, how transactions were performed with gold, and see how deals were closed with a simple handshake.
