Founded in 1955 by amateur paleontologist E.V. “Ernie” Nelson, the gardens feature 23 life-sized sculptures of dinosaurs set among the lush foliage of the area’s temperate rainforest. Step back in time as you wander through a lush rainforest surrounded by life-size dinosaur replicas.
This immersive experience allows your family to imagine the world of these ancient creatures, making learning an adventure for all ages. Discover fascinating facts about dinosaurs, their habitats, and the evolution of life on Earth. If you’re looking for a unique and educational family outing, the Prehistoric Gardens in Port Orford, Oregon, is a must-visit attraction.
What to Expect
A self-guided tour lets visitors casually stroll along the path and discover what the Earth was like millions of years ago. The replicas are scattered along a trail through the surrounding coastal rainforest, which convincingly mimics a primordial landscape with its giant ferns and constant damp humidity. The sculptures are created with a steel frame base and sculpted with mesh-like metal lath and concrete. The largest sculpture is an 86-foot-long brachiosaurus.
Aside from the life-sized dinosaur sculptures, visitors can also enjoy the lush Oregon rainforest surrounding the gardens. Signs provide information about each of the dinosaurs and plants represented. The Prehistoric Gardens are fantastic for young and old, making it a perfect family outing.
Hours of Operation and Cost (as of May 2023)
The Prehistoric Gardens are open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Spring and Fall, with extended hours of 9:00 am to 6:00 pm during the summer months.
Admission fees are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors (62+), 10 for children (3-12), and free for children under two years old.
