Talent on the golf course comes in many forms. Some players can hit 300-yard bombs, while others seem to make every putt they look at. Others go for the enjoyment of being outdoors and getting their steps in. The rarest are those who just love the game – crazy, huh? Eagle Point Golf Club members come in all shapes and skill sets – each with unique talents developed from long professional careers or life lessons learned. This month, Club Management wants to acknowledge and profile member John McKinney.
John McKinney joined Eagle Point Golf Club in 2015. A former “jack of all trades,” John worked in logging, road construction, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing, among other jobs that require you to use your hands – always building. John loves being outdoors and walking. His greatest joy – before marrying his childhood sweetheart, Carleen, was working at a Christmas Tree farm, knowing that his labors would provide joy to many others around the holiday season.
During his weekly walks on the golf course, John noticed the unusual number of broken tees gathering on the teeing grounds, left for eventual collection by the grounds crews or others. John decided to volunteer his time and built the broken tee caddies located on the green and silver teeing grounds throughout Eagle Point Golf Club. With his skills, simple? Yes. But his passion always to make things better and more accessible for others is a toil of love. John loves Eagle Point Golf Club and the challenges the Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Signature Course provides. He loves cold mornings, hard work, and being productive. He doesn’t feel the same way about whiners and slow play! Next time you see John at the Club, please tell him “thank you” for his labor of love. And if you can, get the broken tee INTO the caddie. The grounds crew will appreciate it.
