New to Golf? Here’s What to Expect on the Course

Golf is a game of skill, patience, and tradition. But if you’re new to golf, it can feel like a maze of rules and unspoken customs. A basic understanding of golf rules and etiquette can help you feel more confident on the Eagle Point Golf Club course and ensure you’re a welcome playing partner.

The championship course at The Resort at Eagle Point provides an exceptional golfing experience with scenic views, world-class amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere for players of all levels. It’s the perfect place to learn the ropes while soaking in the natural beauty of the Rogue Valley.

Understanding the Basics: Simplified Rules for Those New to Golf

The USGA maintains a formal golf rulebook, but these key rules are enough for those new to golf to get started.

1. Play the Ball as It Lies

This is one of golf’s golden rules. It means you should always hit the ball from wherever it lands. Unless the rules allow (i.e., relief from a cart path or water hazard), never move or improve your lie.

2. Count Every Stroke

Each swing you take in an attempt to hit the ball counts as a stroke. While the goal is to complete each hole in as few strokes as possible, even missed swings must be tallied. Honesty is a key value in golf, and everyone is expected to keep an accurate score.

3. Out of Bounds and Lost Balls

If your shot sends your ball out of bounds or can’t be found after a five-minute search, you typically take a one-stroke penalty and replay your shot from where you last hit.

4. Dealing with Hazards

Sand bunkers and water hazards are part of the game’s challenge. Depending on the situation, you can play from them or take a penalty stroke and drop the ball within designated areas.

5. Putting Protocol

When you’re on the green, avoid stepping on another player’s line, never rush someone else’s putt, and if you need to lift your ball, mark it first so you can return it to the same spot.

Course Etiquette: Playing with Respect When You’re New to Golf

Golf is as much about manners as it is about mechanics. Here are the unwritten rules everyone who’s new to golf should know.

1. Be on Time

Tee times are sacred. Arrive early to warm up at the practice range or putting green so you’re ready when your group is called. Tardiness can delay everyone’s round.

2. Stay Aware of Others

Sudden movements or noise can be distracting, so keep quiet and still while others are taking their shot. Never stand directly behind or in front of someone preparing to swing.

3. Keep Up the Pace

Slow play affects everyone on the course. Be ready when it’s your turn and limit your practice swings. If your group is holding up others, let faster players play through.

5. Respect the Course

The grounds at the Eagle Point Golf Club are beautifully maintained. Do your part to keep them that way by repairing divots in the fairway, raking bunkers after you play from them, and fixing ball marks on the green.
