Oregon Shakespeare Festival
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is perhaps the most popular theatre-based attraction in Southern Oregon. OSF was founded in 1935 by Angus L. Bowmer. Bowmer was a teacher at the Southern Oregon Normal School–now known as Southern Oregon University. His vision was to bring a theatrical festival to the community to coincide with the City of Ashland’s Fourth of July celebration. The city gave him a conservative $400 to bring his idea to life. Today, world-class performances are held within its walls throughout the year. Since its first production, OSF has become the oldest and largest professional non-profit theatre in the United States. Check out their website to see productions scheduled for the year.
Britt Festival
The Britt Festival has become the Pacific Northwest’s premiere outdoor summer performing arts festival. Visitors to Southern Oregon enjoy impressive musical performances and concerts under the stars amongst picturesque mountainsides. The venue was established by Conductor John Trudeau and his friend Sam McKinney on the former hillside estate of Jacksonville pioneer Peter Britt. In 1963, a handcrafted stage made from plywood and tin-can lights was added to enhance the venue. Today, visitors watch performances on the Britt stage from one of many reserved seats or as part of a more casual seating among the surrounding lawns.
Oregon Cabaret Theater
The Oregon Cabaret Theater fills a beautiful space that was once Ashland’s First Baptist Church. Today, visitors are enthralled by the crystal chandelier and other architectural items salvaged from a 1927 movie palace in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. The Oregon Cabaret Theater opened in 1986 with only 30 performances. Guests loved the experience so much that it has grown to over 270 performances with a year-round schedule.
