It’s no longer much of a secret that some of the world’s best wines are now being produced in Southern Oregon. If you haven’t taken the time to tour our local vineyards, you simply must extend your next vacation to include visits to taste some of the best Southern Oregon wines our region has to offer.
Winemakers and connoisseurs alike flock to the Southern Oregon AVA because its climate provides exceptional conditions for a diverse range of grape varieties. This region includes the warmest growing regions in Oregon, with cool microclimates along hillsides and valleys–creating a perfect mix for both warm- and cool-climate varieties. Additionally, Southern Oregon receives much less rainfall than other regions of the state, with vines, residents, and vacationers enjoying a warm, sunny, arid climate throughout many times of the year.
Wine enthusiasts know the flavor of the grapes is a result of air and soil conditions. The soil throughout the Southern Oregon AVA is varied and complex–much of it derived from the Klamath Mountains comprised of sedimentary rocks that are about 200 million years old.
Winemaking in Southern Oregon is older than the state itself. Back in 1852, an early settler named Peter Britt was one of the first to discover the exceptional conditions of Southern Oregon for wine grapes. Britt opened one of the first wineries located in Jacksonville and helped to establish recognition for the region.
Today, more than 70 varietals are grown in Southern Oregon, including Albariño, Pinot Noirs, Merlots, and Zinfandels. What surprises many visitors is that the number of Southern Oregon wineries is almost as large as the range of varietals, with 55 registered to the region. One of the most famous winetasting routes in the Applegate Valley Wine Trail along 35 miles of roadway beginning in Jacksonville.
