Many golfers hit the putting green to warm up before heading to the first hole, but did you know completing a round of stretches before golf will also help you perform better? Muscle flexibility is key to everything from good balance to a full swing and helps prevent injuries common at the beginning of the season. Proper warmups work your nervous system and stimulate communication between your brain and body. Best of all, you can complete an excellent stretching routine in as little as five minutes.
Try these stretches before golf:
- Split stance rotation. Hold your golf club laterally across your chest. Place one foot behind you and lean forward slightly on the opposite leg for a split stance. Keep your body weight on the lead leg. Maintain your balance as you slowly rotate your torso right and left ten times. Switch out your legs and repeat.
- Squats. Squats will stretch the muscles in your legs and strengthen them simultaneously. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a golf club above your head horizontally with your hands comfortably placed towards each club’s end. Lower your body to a squatting position keeping your upper body straight. Holding the golf club will help keep your upper body well aligned through the squat. Repeat for a total of 10.
- Toe touches. Yes, you remember these from school, and they are still essential to maintain good flexibility as an adult. Stand with your feet together and stretch your hand high to the sky. Some people like to hold onto a golf club above their head to keep their upper body straight. Bend at the waist and touch your toes. Repeat for a total of 10.
- Lunges. Start in a standing position and then place your left leg behind you while bending at your right knee. This is a basic lunge position. Next, raise your left arm over your head and rotate your torso over your right leg to look behind you. Move your right arm down and backward towards your left heel. Repeat for a total of 10 and then switch sides.
- Swings. This is the most common of the stretches before golf games. Find some flat ground or use the driving range. Take your driver and make ten swings as fast as you can to the left from your standard golf stance. Next, switch your grip and make ten fast swings to the right. Make sure you are resetting yourself between each swing.
