Did you know these fast facts about Valentine’s Day?
Looking for something to start a discussion with your Valentine this year? Here are three quick bits of Valentine’s Day trivia to share.
- The first celebration of the holiday honored Saint Valentine in Paris on February 14, 1400. This was like in conjunction with King Charles VI’s establishment of La Cour Amoureuse, or the High Court of Love, that managed marriages, divorces, and issues of infidelity.
- Those candy conversation hearts were originally medicine. In 1847, Boston pharmacist Oliver Chase invented the machinery to produce throat lozenges. He then saw how they would make a better candy instead, and thus Necco wafers was born. It wasn’t for another 15 years that the phrases were stamped to them…and then ANOTHER 40 years before they became heart-shaped.
- Have you been told you wear your heart on your sleeve? That was a real tradition in the Middle Ages. Men and women drew names to determine who their valentine would be. Next, they pinned the name to their sleeve for a week to so everyone could see who their true loves were.
