There are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy during your golfing retreat at the Resort at Eagle Point. A population attraction for many of our guests is the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve in Cave Junction, Oregon. The Oregon Caves are about an hour and a half drive from our Resort, but well worth the travel to witness these spectacular caves with your own eyes.
You’ll find the Oregon Caves deep within the Siskiyou Mountains. The caves are a product of millions of years of changes to the earth’s surface. Volcanic activity metamorphosized limestone into marble throughout the Siskiyou Range. Then, acidic rainfall seeped through the ground and dissolved layers of marble to form the caves. The resulting underground terrain is filled with beautiful calcium formations, including stalactites and stalagmites. You’ll understand why these caves have been called the “marble halls of Oregon.”
Elijah Davidson, who lived in the nearby community of Williams, discovered the cave in 1874. It wasn’t until 1909 that the Oregon Caves became a national monument, and tourists began to flock to see its wonders.
In addition to exploring the cave, there are plenty of other activities for families. Around the caves are miles of hiking trails where you can enjoy viewing the wildlife and scenery of the Siskiyou Mountains. Youth will have fun participating in the educational Junior Ranger program. People of all ages will learn something new from the interactive cave exhibit.
Is a visit to Oregon Caves for everyone?
Not necessarily. Before planning a trip to the Oregon Caves, there are a few things to be aware of. You are not allowed to roam free in the caves but instead must be guided through the caves on one of their official tours. The tour will take you through moderately challenging terrain, including steep stairwells and through tunnels with low ceiling heights. For guests unable to meet the physical demands without assistance, there is an opportunity to see the interior via Watson’s Grotto–a location accessible to those with walkers, wheelchairs, or just general concerns about hiking through the entire cave.
